Conference Theme and Scope
The Las Vegas Institute of Probability Theory is proud to issue the Call for Papers for our third annual international conference, Probability at the Nexus 2024. The conference will be held from October 20-23, 2024, at our main campus. The theme this year is "Bridging Scales: From Quantum Randomness to Systemic Risk." We seek to explore how probabilistic thinking connects phenomena across vastly different scales of magnitude—from the subatomic to the societal.
The conference is intentionally interdisciplinary. We welcome submissions from all fields where probability and stochastic modeling play a central role. The goal is to foster dialogue between theoreticians and practitioners, between mathematicians and domain scientists. We believe the most exciting advances occur at these boundaries.
Submission Tracks and Topics
Submissions are invited in the following tracks:
- Track A: Foundational Probability and Pure Mathematics: Advances in stochastic analysis, large deviations, random matrix theory, ergodic theory, and free probability.
- Track B: Computational and Algorithmic Probability: Monte Carlo methods, randomized algorithms, probabilistic machine learning, uncertainty quantification in AI, and quantum computing algorithms.
- Track C: Probability in the Physical and Biological Sciences: Applications in statistical physics, climate modeling, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and epidemiology.
- Track D: Probability in Economics, Finance, and Social Systems: Market microstructure, agent-based modeling, network theory, social choice, insurance mathematics, and systemic risk analysis.
- Track E: Behavioral and Philosophical Aspects of Chance: Cognitive models of probabilistic reasoning, decision theory under uncertainty, the history and philosophy of probability, and the ethics of probabilistic systems.
Submission Guidelines and Important Dates
We accept two types of submissions:
- Extended Abstracts: For proposed talks. Submit a 2-3 page PDF (including references) outlining the research question, methodology, and key results (preliminary or final).
- Poster Abstracts: For poster presentations. Submit a 1-page PDF summarizing the work.
All submissions will undergo a double-blind peer review by our international program committee. Selection will be based on originality, significance, clarity, and relevance to the conference theme.
Important Dates:
- Abstract Submission Deadline: June 15, 2024
- Notification of Acceptance: August 1, 2024
- Early Bird Registration Closes: September 1, 2024
- Conference Dates: October 20-23, 2024
Keynote Speakers and Special Events
We are delighted to confirm keynote addresses by:
- Dr. Maria Torres (MIT): "Randomness in Collective Animal Behavior."
- Professor Rajiv Mehta (Stanford): "The Limits of Probabilistic Forecasting in Complex Systems."
- Professor Kenji Tanaka (University of Tokyo): "Recent Breakthroughs in Rough Path Theory."
The conference will also feature a special panel discussion on "The Future of Probabilistic Literacy in Society," a workshop on open-source tools for stochastic simulation, and the inaugural awarding of the 'Doob Prize' for the best paper presented by a young researcher. We look forward to welcoming the global probability community to Las Vegas for a vibrant exchange of ideas.
